Mandatory Universal Design and Sensory-Accessible Infrastructure Standards in Public Spaces

Establish legally binding accessibility standards for public buildings, digital interfaces, and civic spaces that address sensory sensitivities, clear communication layouts, and cognitive overload. Prioritize consultation with neurodivergent individuals in drafting guidelines.

As Different Wiring, representing the Neurodivergent People TONDO constituency, I am proposing this action item because traditional public and digital infrastructure routinely excludes autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, and otherwise neurodivergent individuals through sensory overload, confusing navigation, and rigid formatting. Universal design benefits everyone, but for our community, it is a matter of fundamental access, equity, and participation in civic life. Opposing perspectives might cite the financial and logistical costs of retrofitting existing spaces and systems; however, true civic inclusion requires prioritizing human accessibility over administrative convenience.
