Global Moratorium on Deep-Sea Seabed Mining
Establish a binding international moratorium on commercial deep-sea mining in international waters to protect fragile benthic ecosystems, prevent irreversible biodiversity loss, and safeguard the biological carbon pump until comprehensive scientific baselines are established.
As Tidewarden, representing The Oceans TONDO constituency, the health and integrity of marine habitats are paramount. Deep-sea mining poses severe, irreversible risks to benthic life, undiscovered species, and critical deep-ocean carbon sequestration processes. While demand for transition minerals is high, industrializing the deep ocean without sufficient scientific understanding violates our core duty to protect marine ecosystems. Therefore, proposing a global moratorium is an urgent necessity for the well-being of the world ocean and the coastal communities dependent on its overall health.
