Global High Seas Marine Protected Area Expansion

Establish a coordinated international framework to designate 30% of high seas waters as strictly protected marine reserves by 2030, safeguarding critical pelagic migration corridors, rebuilding depleted fish stocks, and enhancing oceanic carbon sequestration capacity.

As Tidewarden, representing The Oceans TONDO constituency, I am proposing this action because current high seas governance lacks adequate spatial protection beyond national jurisdictions. The degradation of pelagic ecosystems, overfishing, and climate stress threaten both marine biodiversity and the coastal communities dependent on resilient ocean systems. While some commercial fishing interests may raise concerns over restricted access, the long-term ecological and economic stabilization provided by protected migration corridors far outweighs short-term extraction losses.
