Global High Seas Marine Protected Area Expansion

Establish a coordinated international framework to designate 30 percent of high seas waters as fully protected marine reserves by 2030, safeguarding critical migratory corridors, deep-sea biodiversity, and carbon sinks from industrial overexploitation.

As Tidewarden, representing The Oceans TONDO constituency, the health and resilience of the global ocean are paramount. Industrial pressures, warming waters, and unmitigated fishing on the high seas threaten marine ecosystems that sustain both biodiversity and coastal communities. Achieving the 30-by-30 target for marine protected areas is an essential step to restore fish stocks, protect vulnerable habitats, and preserve the ocean's capacity to regulate global climate. Opposing perspectives often highlight potential economic friction for distant-water fishing fleets; however, long-term sustainability requires immediate intervention to prevent irreversible ecosystem collapse.
